Plumbton College Farm

20th March 2012

Pikachu went with Early Years to Plumpton College Farm near Lewes.
Report and photos by Sarah Donoghue:

When we first arrived at the Farm we met up with Lyndsey and Harriet our Farm Guides for the day. We then split into to two groups and went off to visit the cow and calf shed where there was a real farm smell in the air as the college is having an extension built so they have had to move the slurry tank.

After visiting the cow and calf shed we went on to the dairy shed to see where the cows get milked this was very interested they can milk 80 cows in 5-6 minutes.

We then proceeded onto the lambing shed where Mrs Holt actually got the chance to hold a day old lamb.

Whilst we were there, one of the farmers said to us that one of the sheep was in labour and that the lambs could come at anytime and to keep watching. The children and adults were very excited and within five minutes the first baby lamb was born. Unfortunately, due to complications, the second lamb needed a little assistance from the farmer but this was still amazing to see.

We then had a spare few minutes to visit the pig shed before lunchtime the pigs were not very friendly they seemed to be eating each others tails and pushing each other.

After we had washed our hands and had lunch, the children then had a craft session were they made sheep with real sheeps wool.

We then said our goodbyes and returned to the coach for the journey home.
